Everything Antioch Parents Need to Know
Once your child's braces come off or their last Invisalign tray is finished, it's tempting to think the work is done. But retainers are what keep that new smile in place, and skipping them is one of the most common ways families see their child's teeth shift back. Here's what parents in Antioch and the surrounding area need to know about retainers, from how long to wear them to how to keep them in good shape.
WHY RETAINERS MATTER AFTER BRACES OR INVISALIGN
Teeth don't stay put on their own right after treatment. The bone and gum tissue around each tooth need time to settle into its new position, and until that happens, teeth can drift back toward where they started. This is called relapse, and it's the main reason we fit every child with a retainer as soon as their braces come off or their aligner treatment wraps up.
TYPES OF RETAINERS WE USE AT KANOPI KIDS
We typically recommend one of two retainer types, depending on your child's treatment and preferences:
Clear (Essix) retainers: A thin, clear plastic tray that fits snugly over the teeth, similar to a clear aligner. Most kids and teens like these because they're nearly invisible and comfortable to wear.
Hawley retainers: A removable retainer made of acrylic and metal wire. They're a little more durable than clear retainers and easy for our team to adjust if needed.
HOW LONG SHOULD MY CHILD WEAR THEIR RETAINER?
Right after treatment, we recommend full-time wear, meaning your child wears their retainer all day and night except when eating, drinking anything besides water, or brushing their teeth. After several months, most kids can transition to wearing their retainer only at night.
That nighttime wear isn't just for the first year, though. Teeth can shift at any age, so we recommend children (and adults) continue wearing a retainer at night indefinitely to protect the results of their treatment long term.
RETAINER CARE TIPS FOR PARENTS
A few simple habits go a long way in keeping a retainer clean and intact:
Clean it daily with a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water rather than toothpaste, which can scratch clear plastic retainers.
Keep it in its case any time it's out of your child's mouth. Retainers left on napkins or in backpacks are among the most common things lost or accidentally thrown away.
Keep it away from hot water, the dishwasher, and direct sunlight, since heat can warp the plastic and cause it to stop fitting properly.
Bring it to every checkup so we can make sure it still fits well as your child's mouth continues to grow.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD SKIPS WEARING THEIR RETAINER?
Even a few days without a retainer can be enough for teeth to start shifting, especially in the months right after braces or Invisalign come off. If wear is inconsistent for longer than that, some of the movement can become difficult to reverse without another round of treatment. If your child's retainer hasn't fit right in a while, or if it's been sitting in a drawer for weeks, give us a call so we can check things out before it becomes a bigger issue.
Families throughout Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley, Pittsburg, Discovery Bay, and Bay Point bring their kids to Kanopi Kids for retainer checkups and orthodontic care. If it's time for a new retainer or a fit check, we're happy to help.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Does my child need a retainer after every type of orthodontic treatment?
Yes. Whether your child had traditional braces or Invisalign, their teeth need a retainer to hold the new position in place. Without one, teeth are likely to drift back toward where they started.
Will my child need to wear a retainer forever?
Most children continue wearing a retainer at night indefinitely. Teeth can shift throughout life, not just in the first year or two after treatment, so ongoing nighttime wear is the best way to protect your child's results.
What should I do if my child loses or breaks their retainer?
Call our Antioch office as soon as possible. Going without a retainer, even for a short time, can allow teeth to begin shifting, so we'll want to get your child a replacement or a temporary solution quickly.
Can my child eat or drink with their retainer in?
Clear retainers should come out for anything besides water, since food and hot drinks can stain or warp the plastic. Hawley retainers are more durable, but we still recommend removing them at mealtimes.
How do I clean my child's retainer?
Brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water. Avoid toothpaste, which can scratch clear retainers, and never use hot or boiling water, which can cause the plastic to warp.
