Everything Antioch Parents Need to Know
As a parent, you want to do everything right for your child. But when it comes to dental health, a lot of families in Antioch aren't sure where to start. The most common question we hear at Kanopi Kids is simple: when should I actually bring my child in for the first time? The answer might surprise you.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that every child see a dentist by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth coming in, whichever comes first. That usually means somewhere between 6 and 12 months of age.
We know that sounds early. A lot of parents assume there is nothing to check until the child has a full set of teeth. But that first visit is less about cleaning and more about making sure development is on track, identifying any early risk factors, and getting your child comfortable in a dental environment before any real work ever needs to happen.
Baby teeth are not throwaway teeth. They hold space for adult teeth, support your child's ability to speak and chew properly, and problems left untreated in primary teeth can affect the permanent teeth developing underneath. Early cavities are also more common than most parents realize. Early childhood caries (tooth decay) is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions in children in the U.S., and it is almost entirely preventable with the right guidance.
Starting early gives us the chance to:
At Kanopi Kids, we design first visits to be calm, quick, and fun. For infants and toddlers, we typically do a "knee-to-knee" exam where you hold your child in your lap and we do a gentle look inside the mouth. There are no scary tools, no drilling, and no surprises.
We will check the gums, any teeth that have come in, the bite, and the jaw. We will also take a few minutes to walk you through what to expect over the next year, how to clean your baby's mouth at home, what foods to watch out for, and when to start using a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
The whole appointment is usually 20 to 30 minutes. You leave with a clear picture of your child's oral healt hand a simple game plan going forward.
Do not stress if you missed the one-year window. The best time to start is now. Whether your child is 2, 4, or 6 and has never seen a dentist, we will meet them exactly where they are. Our team at Kanopi Kids is trained specifically in working with anxious or reluctant kids, and we take the time to build trust before we do anything else.
We also see a lot of families who had their child at a general dentist and are looking for a practice that specializes in kids. Pediatric dentists complete an additional two to three years of residency after dental school focused entirely on treating children, including those with special needs, dental anxiety, and complex developmental cases.
One of the biggest reasons families in Antioch delay care is cost. At Kanopi Kids, we proudly acceptMedi-Cal and Denti-Cal, so there is no reason to wait. Every child deserves access to great dental care regardless of insurance coverage, and we work hard to make that happen for the families in our community.
